In all industries today engineers are designing more complex and tighter tolerance parts. The design of machine tools has changed to meet these new part requirements. At E.T. we can produce 80 to 90% of the features on a complex prismatic part on a single 5-axis CNC Machining Center using a single fixture.
Making a part complete in one chucking produces higher quality components without the expensive fixturing cost required on a conventional 3-axis CNC Machining Center. In addition there are several other significant advantages. First, on shorter runs, the fixturing cost per piece can be intolerable (up to 5 fixtures per part). On a 5-axis all we need is two fixtures to make the part complete.
Second, by making the part complete nearly 70 to 80% of the deburring can be accomplished on the machine making a burr free part possible.
Third, the angles, parallelisms, and perpendicularities of the parts machined on a 5-axis are machine dependent completely eliminating the possible variation of transferring a part from fixture to fixture.
These benefits also apply to components produced on a 4-axis Machining Center. At E.T., five of our machining centers are 4 or 5 axis.
